Is my phone unlocked to install eSIM

What does "unlocked phone" mean?

Calls and connections to mobile data on mobile phones are dependent on a carrier. Your phone can connect to a carrier's network.

If your phone is unlocked, it can connect to any carrier's network.

Your phone can only use the network from one carrier if it is locked, which is a condition of your contract. Therefore, if you insert a new SIM card, your phone won't recognize it.

There are four ways to determine if your phone is unlocked:

From where did you purchase your phone?

  • Your phone is presumably unlocked if you purchased it directly from the manufacturer's store, like Apple or Samsung.

  • To use an eSIM, however, you may not be able to if you purchased the phone through a telecom carrier (such as Orange, AT&T, or Movistar).

Use a different SIM card.

  • Obtaining a SIM card from a friend or member of your family will make it simple to determine whether your phone is unlocked.
  • Your phone is unlocked if you can use this SIM to make calls or send text messages on it.

  • Your phone is locked to your provider and cannot be used with an eSIM if you are unable to make calls or send SMS messages using the new SIM card.

Review your settings (iPhone only)

IOS 14 and later support the following steps:

  • Access the Settings menu.

  • Select "General" by scrolling down.

  • Access the "About" page.

  • Next, scroll down and find for "Network Provider Lock" or "Carrier Lock." If "No SIM limitations" is displayed, your iPhone is unlocked and is capable of accepting an eSIM. If not, the iPhone needs to be connected to a certain carrier.

Consult with your provider

  • The best course of action is to contact your carrier if you are unable to determine whether your phone is unlocked.

  • If your phone is locked to their network or is unlocked, they should be able to tell you.

  • They can also aid in network-restricted phone unlocking.
